In February 2025, Michael Otto took over the management of pro-micron GmbH. Amidst the integration into Sandvik Coromant, our company is in a significant phase of transformation.

The core values Winning Together, Responsibility, Customer Focus, and Curiosity form the foundation.

Under the motto “Secure quality and productivity – with spike®“, we are continuously developing our software and sensor-based spike® solutions for automated measurement, documentation, monitoring and optimization of processes.

We will continue to expand these possibilities in 2026 – from the plug-and-play solution in the handy spike® case to the fully integrated monitoring solution.

spike®2

The foundation for our technology is the spike®2 released in April 2025. Its first delivery took place in July.

Our new, optimized sensor tool holder offers numerous improvements and highlights:

• Resistance to speed: Can be used in processes with up to 30,000 rpm
• Longer battery life: e.g. several weeks in transport mode
• Increased precision due to an increased sampling rate: 8,000 Hz
• New magnetic charging concept with USB-C adapter
• Optimized design with a smaller interference contour

fusion Software

Whether in connection with our spike® sensors or as a pure software solution – our “fusion” software has also developed rapidly this year.
Version 1.5 was released in April, which brought the following optimizations:

• UI/UX improvements for easier and more intuitive operation as well as more flexibility on smaller output devices
• More efficient processing of raw data
• Simplified assignment of measurement data
• Intelligent tagging and labeling of measurement data
• Compatibility extension for your new spike®2

From November 19 to 21, 2025, pro-micron will be on site at the Sandvik Coromant Tech Days 2025 in the Sandvik Coromant Center in Pune, India. Together with Sandvik Coromant and other partners, we will show how sensor-based solutions such as spike® support the journey towards Manufacturing Wellness and make machining processes more transparent, stable and productive.

The focus of our appearance in Pune is the spike® sensory tool holder technology. Our solutions record cutting forces and vibrations directly on the tool and make this data visible in real time.

At Tech Days, we will be showing, among other things:

• Live milling and drilling applications with spike®
• Visualization of each individual cutting edge during machining
• Use of force and vibration signals as quality indicators
• How thresholds can be defined to detect critical events in the process
• Opportunities for analysis and optimization in downstream data evaluation

The high sensitivity of the sensors (tools from >1 mm) and a sampling rate of up to 8 kHz enable a very high-resolution view of machining processes.
This means that spike® supports both process optimization and quality assurance in series production.

With the Tech Days in Pune, Sandvik Coromant is strengthening India’s role as an important location for the modern manufacturing industry.
In the ultra-modern environment of the Sandvik Coromant Center, real application cases can be demonstrated directly on the machine.

Secure quality and productivity with spike®!

The year 2024 will be remembered as an economically turbulent and historically significant year. For pro-micron, it was one of the most important years since the company was founded. With the acquisition by Sandvik and upgrades to our “fusion” software product, the year began very purposefully.

In the course of the year, we also reached an important milestone in the hardware sector: the delivery of the 700th individually specified spike® holder variant.

Thanks to personnel reinforcement in our Tech Center, we were able to significantly expand our capacities for live demonstrations and customer visits. In addition, pro-micron was present at numerous important events and trade fairs.
At the end of the year, we received a special visit from high-ranking representatives from Sandvik Coromant.

In February, the acquisition of pro-micron GmbH by Sandvik, which had already been announced in December 2023, was successfully completed. Since then, both companies have been working intensively on integration as well as on the joint further development and optimization of our product range.

The first of two planned software upgrades was successfully rolled out in February. This upgrade included significant improvements in user-friendliness as well as a new analysis area that enables deeper insights into the recorded process and force data.

In the course of a further upgrade, both customer feedback was responded to and further features were added in the analysis area.

Since spike® can be individually adapted to customer requirements on tool holders of various manufacturers and sizes, the 700th spike® with individual specifications left our company this year.
This number underlines the versatility and adaptability of spike® as well as the high competence of our team.

In the middle of the year, we reinforced our Tech Center with personnel and made extensive optical and capacity-related changes in order to offer visitors an even more impressive experience.
Our new 140-inch video wall is particularly worth mentioning.

At the beginning of 2024, our spike®Inspindle was presented at the Open House event of DMG MORI in Pfronten. In April, we were represented at the GROB in-house exhibition in Mindelheim to present the new analysis feature within fusion.
As part of the new cooperation and ownership situation, we took part in the Sandvik TechDays in Renningen in April, with a stand, on a machine with spike® live demonstration and a lecture slot.
In September, we concluded the trade fair year with our participation in AMB 2024 in Stuttgart, the leading trade fair for the industry.

In November, Sandvik Coromant CEO Helen Blomqvist visited us in Kaufbeuren together with Sanela Lundqvist (Vice President HR) and Rüdiger Mannherz (CFO). After a tour of the company, a live demonstration followed in our Tech Center as well as a subsequent Q&A session between Sandvik and pro-micron, in which the common future was discussed.

Company Tour:

During a tour of the pro-micron GmbH building, which has been occupied since January 2021, our guests gained an overview of the work and production processes as well as the general culture of pro-micron.

Product Presentation and Live Machining in the Pro-Micron TechCenter:

This was followed by a live demonstration in our TechCenter.
Over coffee, we presented our current developments in the field of spike® technology as well as our latest fusion software features.

Q&A Session with all Employees:

Finally, a joint question-and-answer session was held together with all employees, in which our employees learned more about the SANDVIK culture in exchange with our guests.

Helen Blomqvist was impressed by our work and our product range.
She emphasized: “We have seen firsthand the innovative work that is being done here. Your commitment is truly commendable. It’s fantastic to have you as part of our family.”

This visit was a significant event for us and underlines our close connection to SANDVIK Coromant.

Our spike® team investigated this question. Our trade fair team presented the results and other new developments relating to the spike® model series from September 18 – 23 at the EMO in Hanover.

In cooperation with numerous partners, we have compiled four different spike® use cases on the subject of “Tool Failure Point.” In these use cases, both our spike®_mobile sensor tool holder and our spike®_inspindle spindle-integrated model were represented. Together with our “fusion” software, spike® offers a powerful solution on the road to digital machining.

Here is a Brief Overview of our Spike® Use Cases:

• Aerospace component with GROB and gemineers – High-precision aluminum machining with a digital twin for 100% process documentation.
• CFRP drilling with REGO-FIX and Sharon-Cutwell – Algorithm-based prediction of tool failure points to reduce quality testing effort and costs.
• Titanium machining with DMG MORI and CERATIZIT – KPI-based tool life prediction with live quality prediction and process force monitoring.
• AI-based drilling with FANUC, Gühring and Big Data in Manufacturing – Quality prediction with algorithms based on spike® process force data.

Our trade fair team showed many interested visitors how to use our spike® sensor to determine and even predict the actual tool life. In this way, spike® helps in the manufacture of components to fully utilise the tool and thus save costs.

A clear highlight for our trade fair team were the numerous air shows on the large exhibition grounds, where many impressive aircraft could be seen.

After the exhausting ascent, we were all happy when we finally arrived at the top. After putting down our equipment, we had a good meal, plenty of drinks, and of course a good atmosphere. This allowed all colleagues to enjoy this team event in a friendly atmosphere.

After the meal, the first farewell came, as some made their way home again. So the team event ended for part of the group with an adventurous night tobogganing down the mountain.

For the rest of our group, it continued the next morning after a quiet night in the alpine hut. After a hearty breakfast, it was also time for us to say, “Let’s go” as we tobogganed down the mountain to plunge into the next adventure, a day of skiing in the Neunerköpfle ski area in the Tannheimer Tal. After this strenuous excursion, it was also time for the last pro-microneers to say “Pfiat Gott”, and so we finally made our way home exhausted at the end of the team event.

The employees involved in the individual production steps are very familiar with the overall system and have all the prerequisites for the production of our high-tech sensors.

Due to the current situation, certain components cannot always be delivered on time. Strategic cooperation with our suppliers enables us to deliver products such as spike® on schedule.
